The Ankang Library, originally opened in 1984, had become a relic of a bygone era, its facilities lagging behind the rapid advancements of the information age. United Units Architects sought to rejuvenate this old institution, turning it into a welcoming community space that stands out in stark contrast to its existing context. The design team's vision was to create a space that would reactivate the cultural life of the local community, a goal they have achieved with resounding success. Since the library's reopening, the number of daily visitors has surged from a mere 10 to an impressive 3,000.
The renovated library adopts a modern curtain wall system, resulting in a clean, simple massing and pure colour. The use of transparent glazing in conjunction with delicate perforated aluminum cladding creates a halo-like effect. When viewed against the backdrop of the vibrant and chaotic old city, the library presents a dramatic contrast, almost like a surreal space-time dislocation. This juxtaposition of the old and the new, the chaotic and the orderly, adds an unexpected layer of drama and intrigue to the library's design.
The renovation project was carried out between March and October 2020, in Ankang, Shaanxi, China. The design team, led by Yongzheng Li and Qizhi Li, utilized low iron glass and perforated aluminum cladding to realize their vision. The renovated library now spans an area of 4,000 m², offering ample space for the community to gather, learn, and grow.
The Ankang Library renovation project is a testament to the power of innovative design and thoughtful renovation. It is a shining example of how architecture can breathe new life into old structures, transforming them into vibrant community spaces that serve the needs of the modern age. The project's success is reflected not only in the increased visitor numbers but also in the prestigious Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award it received in 2021. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Ankang Library certainly fits the bill.
In conclusion, the Ankang Library renovation project by United Units Architects is a shining example of how thoughtful design and innovative use of materials can transform an outdated institution into a vibrant community hub. The project's success is a testament to the power of architecture and design in shaping our communities and improving our quality of life.
